Death of a Poet

by Rajani Kanth

For my daughters, Anjana, Malini, Antara, Indrina

Why weep
for (s)he is dead?
gone to fluted tones
past garrot
of sobs and groans
to live high on
immortal loans
of palisading
poesy

weep not:
rejoice (s)he be gone
prophet pensive
dreamer lorn
to  better worlds
benevolent,
fond,
of  fair Elysium
where no
creature  wan
is ever born –
free from
contumely
scathing scorn
of hunger, thirst
and spiriti torn

the poet’s passing
revivifies
sordid earth
humbles hubris
blesses birth
of evanesced
hope
transducing
woe
girding loins
of dun despair
dearth of truth
want of ruth –
in falter
of metre
fermenting
care
ill disporting,
debonair –

arrives with the
moping
mocking wind  –
dies for us,
we that sinned –
departs, like
sultry , seraphic
wisp of air
