In Augury, by Rajani Kanth
by Rajani Kanth
Neither a moon of our delight
nor a prince of darkest night:
is it eclipse, or ellipsis?
no one can really say –
the times they are all distrait
judgment, long, has fled away:
to protest, too, is quite outre
for every dog must have its day –
the stage is set, the die is cast
no link there be to remem’brance past:
main street, torpid, drags along
wall street, turbid, admits no wrong –
History’s over, the Game is clear
soothsayers say: the End is near
we may not smile, nor shed a tear
Hope all dead, what’s left is Fear:
so woe betide, alack, alas:
dare we hope this, too, shall pass?
