(For all who thirst)
A hunger burst upon me wild
the source I could not descry
I rose from a sleepless slumber
to ask the wherefore and why
I had stood my life at windows
not ever daring to eat
but staring at such diners
Deep delved in wine and meat
This fruit of the bread that breaks
I saw it healed them not
the juice of the grape that slakes
I saw it steeled them not
I had put aside in the past
the grosser appetite
for the soul had so dearly wished
to be but laden light
But give me now your breadstick
your chalice of chafing wine
tonight I think it’s high time
to welter with the swine
