Futility

Be not chary
your time is short
what love will tend
will hate abort

be not wary
it matters not
let fortune fade
it’s soon forgot

give it away
not yours to keep
but hoard your tears
they’re yours to weep

day beshrouds
a night infernal
light only hides
a dark eternal

the sun will rise
yet sunsets pend
what day begins
the night will end

fleeting fly
fond hope and cheer
staunch befriend
but loss and fear

we abjure
all realities
our instinct-bound
banalities

the spirit soars
it’s meant to be
to thin disguise
our non entity

we dwell but in
a halcyon dream
to stifle soft
the primal scream

we build to cloak
our dun dismay
myths evoke
to hide distrait

in ignorance
we wreathe our joys
soon dissolved
in ambient noise

far and forgot
turn near and dear
we envelope
what’s cold and clear

though hapless be
the universe
you clutch at reeds
I cleave to verse

*

Meaning is what
we impute
where Nothing is
the awful Truth

and yet we weave
to staunch the rot
to still believe
what we know is not
