MLK

They got him
they got him
was a dreary
day

they shot him
they shot him
singing
hip hip hooray

who got him
who shot him
that no one will
assay

but you can bet
your beating heart
wasn’t the one
they say

*

They can bring
down anyone
in the land of the
smoking gun

yet get away
scot free
under a smiling
sun

sure they named
a fall guy
there is always
such a one

it’s the old old
playbook
a conspiracy
of one

*

The deep state
gets deeper
every dogged
day

the climb gets
only steeper
every blessed
day

*

In god’s own
country
it is far from
being odd

just a little bit
of force
and a whole
lot of fraud

the bigot’s heart
is black not red
his blood runs
redneck blue

if Martin had
a successor
they’d do that
to him too

*

So recall
MLK today
now that he’s
all gone

but remember that
his struggle
still goes on
and on

*

Yes bad faith
and bigotry
just go on
and on

cast them out
with a pitchfork –
they come surging
back anon

*

Fling not repentance
into the sordid
fray

this bad blood
may fester on
perhaps
till judgment day

the MLK
of human kindness
dried in blood
that day

that ilk of
human blindness –
yet abounds
today
