Ode to Insomnia

A verse a day

keeps the vipers

Away

Holds the wolf

in the woods

lets children

come play

So let us away

this Sturm und

Drang day

Though aspect be

wan

Spirit’s still

gay

Hide idylls

in hills

When vales

Are distrait

And though

prospect be dun

And dotage

Be fey

As the rude

yet scoff

at the raptured

who pray

Good comes

of Good

despite some

delay

Those April

misgivings

bring fruit,

come May

*

So children

away

let the mind

go stray

Let apples

blow red

and these verses

blench gray

They will

yet keep faith

nor ever

betray

Feed not on

tuffets

on curds and

on whey

All too gauche

even a little

outre

And as banal

as

an apple a day

The sun be

shining

let’s make

sweet hay

Turn tears

at midnight

into verses

by day

*

So come,

children

let us away

Morning is scorching

night is

aflame

Which is the boon

and which ,

the bane?

Stranded by night

stricken by

day

Rue in dank

vapors

fret in the

fray

*

Night has its

questions

the Day will

disdain

Why care

to answer

when meanings

are plain?

Sky spreads

diaphanous

Inky its mane

Fear swells

ascendant

courage will

wane

Winds wail like

Tarzan

Leaves wilt

Like Jane

Night rolls

Like thunder

sleep scatters

Like rain

*

Songs of

the Ages

goblets of brine

Unsplendid

Creation,

Evil Design?

Dark are

the spaces

presaging

decline

As heaven

full rages

so will this

rhyme

Dawn breaks

in starlight

as I ,

unsublime

Lie woke in

these pages

till the end

of our time
