Delusion

( for Wolfram)

When you sleep
the eternal
sleep

Will the angels
up and
weep?

Will skies
above
in ferment
laid
thunder loud
and deep?

*

Life drones
on in its
mottled
ways

The sun
trundles on
anon

As one by
one
we take our
leave

When our
diurnal
day is done

*

No mark remains
of name
or state

Earth lumbers
on in
mawkish gait

*

So waive
high swank
of caste
and creed

Or rich trope
of word and
deed

We are but
lowly kin
of the humble
worm
and weed
