The Jungle

How oft
shall we**
make War?

*

Once for every
dying
soul?

once for
every bullet
hole?

once for every
child who
screams

woke from dark
nocturnal
dreams?

*

Once for every
humble
heart

shot to pieces
torn
apart?

once for
every
act of hate

brokered by
an angry
state
?

*

Once for
every
homicide

that we
fain
allow

and
let
abide?

*

What does
it all
presage?

the
venting
madness

the
unhinged
rage?

as the
dead
pile up

on either
side

in
unrelenting
omnicide?

*
And how
will it
all

come to
end?

who shall
rise
above

and so
transcend?

sick to
death

of blood
and gore

saying enough
enough

stop
no more?

*

And as
corpses
rot

on the
spreading
field

in due
remorse

to reason
yield

to let
fall
for now

the sword
and
shield

until such
time

the
savage breast

swells with
hubris

yet
again?

*

We never
left the
Forest

are still
clung to
the Cave

in primal
belligerence

to puff
rant
and rave

*

Not homo
sapiens sapiens

judging by
out ways

but wild Apes
of the
Jungle

for the rest
of our
days
