The Tulip

(For Jocelyn)

The Tulip

shot

up

From yond

bed

today

Joyous

and blazing

red

Proud

debutante

At a high

school

ball

O the

haughty toss

of the head!

*

Tomorrow’s frost

may

lay her down

The morrow

when the Sun

is fled

But with

love

in tow

She lilteth

high

Spurns

what lies

ahead

*

Thus

springs

Hope

In

true love’s

breast

Preparatory

to the Storm

Cares not

if it

wilt at morn

If tonight

the bed

be warm

*

Between

Loyalty

And Treason

Lies the

Cruel Lash

Of Dawn

Heart

In tow

Even the

jaded

glow

Long after

the Troth

is gone

*

The Grim

Reaper

reaps anon

Yet must

we

frolic nigh

Till

bushed

By Fate

We are

snatched

away

Ere love

can lisp

goodbye

*

My red tulip

Flaunts a

flaming red

Today

She is Queen

of the Ball

Disdaineth She

Furies

to come

Envy

Spite,

And Treachery

For Eden

too

must Fall!

*

Let not

arrant scoffers

deride

Her chalice

of brimming

joys

In her

soft

bower

In that

forswearing

Hour

She has

tasted

Paradise
